OK so somebody at that bastion of liberal UK journalism The Guardian has gone and written a not-exactly glowing remembrance of the 30th Anniversary of SST Records. Though not without a handfull of factual errors and a hedging-their-bets, begrudging take on things that continually reminds me I don’t live in SoCal no more. But hey I’m not complaining – us ex-pats gotta take what we can get.

Yeah, not exactly glowing (or necessarily accurate), though I do like Kira’s legwarmers in that photo!
Clearly the most fashionable period for the Flag!
Clearly… always loved Hank’s mesh top, too. Looks like he stepped straight out of a leather bar.
Also note Henry’s still wearing Vans footwear, showing he hadn’t yet outgrown his allegiance to early Thasher mag subculture.
now THAT’S weird, just as I was hitting your site, Six Pack came on (the Dez version).
ELECTION DAY is finally here!
Nazz I voted absentee weeks ago. STOP THE DRAMA VOTE OBAMA!
I always figured the mesh shirt was his homage to Danzig. We Are 138 is with Hank right??
There’s vid of John Doe wearing a similar top around this time, too – but surely the X-Man was referencing then-current cholo fashion, not Danzig. Now I’m thinking too much about this.
dear readers,
german longest operating print fanzine, TRUST FANZINE, coming out since 1986 as a bi-monthly zine about punk, hc, underground, is celebrating the 30 years of SST in his upcoming issue # 133, december 08 /january 09 with interviews and memories by joe carducci, ray farell, mike wittahker (old sst workers crew), mike watt, mike neider (blast), hazelwood records (they put out some records by ex-sst bands like saccharine trust in the ninties) and an anniversary comment by john wright of no means no plus the one and only SST Discografie from # 001 to # 350 and three articles by trust fanzine´s own writers about sst.
its all in german, but it has some nice layout.

cheers
jan /trust zine
Jan: Great! Only wish I knew a bit more German. Cool to see you’re talking to Hazelwood Recs – the SACCHARINE TRUST, UNIVERSAL CONGRESS OF and MECOLODIACS CDs they put out sure do get a lotta play here.
aloha,
thanks! yeah, gordon from hazelwood (producer of the mentioned records) wrote a very good and in dept article.
nevertheless, maybe you want to have the issue and review it, even if you cant read german? it has a nice layout and shit :)
just email me (and all other people interested to get a copy for review for their blog, zine).
thanks
cheers
jan
shit, forgot the email,
roehlkj@hotmail.com

jan
Jan: top anythings are difficult for me, but given the way I feel tonight my top SST would definitely have to include
SACCHARINE TRUST – We Became Snakes
SLOVENLY – Riposte (A Little Resolve)
SAINT VITUS – S/T
V.A. – The Blasting Concept II
and yes
DESCENDENTS – Milo Goes to College
Sir thanks indeed I will take you up on your offer of a review copy. I did take a few years of German 20+ years ago in high school – maybe some of it will come back to me? Be e-mailing you soon . . .
:)
i would say “a human certainty” by ST is better than sex :)
Agreed: though I think “A Human Certainty” may be ABOUT sex
oh shit!
actually, i never understood the lyrics.
i thought it was about “we are all guilty” .
well, sth. i learned today :)
Riposte better than We Shoot For The Moon? I think not… But ranking is hard, it’s true.
I found a Slovenly video online somewhere once. But I can’t find it now. Help?
Max: Well you’re not alone in believing “We Shoot” is superior. Though they both seem kinda limp in comparison to that NAKED HIPPY s/t LP from ’89.
How are things, Max?
Things are good, thanks. Better now that I found your blog!
My best to A. Come visit us in Hong Kong. We moved back.
Since you had to mention them–Naked Hippy on youtube:
They were slovenly but not Slovenly. Yours truly just might be lurking in the shadows in this clip.
That NAKED HIPPY drummer kills. But if that clip really was from July 1990 . . . weren’t we badtrippin’ in Vegas that month?
Hong Kong! Ally has an old friend living in Jakarta who she’d love to visit . . . maybe we could swing a SE Asia trip soon?
Ah! You might be right. Still makes my skin go a little cold thinking about that day. Don’t forget the goodtrippin’ of that era. There was plenty of that too, if I recall, though not in Vegas.
Come to HK. We’ll put you up. Rita (my eldest) likes zombies.
Never seen their promo pic with Kira before. Love that group, especially Rollins with “sensitive lover” haircut.
Marshall:
Haha – yes sensitive lover indeed. This must of been taken only a few months before Naomi Peterson cornered the action on all SST band photography.
